While Easterseals Adult Day Services have returned to in-person services in a limited capacity, COVID-19 continues to interrupt many of our participants’ usual volunteer partnerships and community connections. When a call came from the office of Assemblymember Luz Rivas (D-39th-North Hollywood) requesting volunteer support with a critical project, participants Samuel and Brenda, and their Life Skills Coaches Silvia and Javier, happily agreed to sign on for the month-long commitment.
Easterseals has maintained a partnership with Rivas’ office for many years, with participants volunteering in various ways, including assisting with special projects. Following LA County COVID-19 public health guidelines in a safe setting, the Easterseals team was able to return to the office and assemble information packets for the Red Ribbon Week program at 70 local community schools without a hitch!
Red Ribbon Week, which takes place each year from October 23 through 31, is the nation’s largest and longest-running drug-use prevention campaign. To prepare for the 2021 campaign, the Easterseals volunteer team assisted members of Rivas’ staff with putting together educational literature, crosswords, word search activities, bookmarks, posters, and resource information for drug prevention activities.
After the project was completed, Assemblymember Rivas and her staff presented the Easterseals team with Certificates of Recognition for their commitment to the volunteer project, with the Assemblymember sharing the news on her social media.
Adult Day Services Director Cynthia Fernandez said, “We thank Assemblymember Rivas and her staff for reaching out to us and continuing this wonderful and beneficial partnership.”
